History:

As early as 1683, this neighborhood was the home for Dutch and Swedish settlers which later was overtaken by the English led by William Penn. Post revolution, the first U.S. Navy ship was built here and was a trivial supply and transportation hub for troops during the Civil War. The neighborhood later became the city’s manufacturing sector. It now houses a host of retail centers including Pier 70 and Columbus Commons along Columbus Boulevard.
The first official Mummers’ Parade in 1901 brought something unique to the community. String bands joined marchers a year later. A century later, Mummer mania still grips the area and many of the clubs are headquartered in the area. The New Year’s Parade returned to South Broad, but the “Two Street” march never left.
“If you build it, they will come” is the first phrase that comes to mind when thinking of the emergent modern-day Pennsport neighborhood. With owners and investors funneling money toward renovating the classic Colonial styled homes along with builders erecting contemporary styled new constructions, this historic neighborhood is rightfully experiencing a great resurgence. Considered one of the oldest sections of South Philadelphia, Pennsport is also rated as one of the top walking and biking neighborhoods in Philadelphia. The plentiful parks, eateries, bars, and attractions make it easy to see why.

Attractions:

Home to not only the infamous Mummers and their Museum, the historic streets of Pennsport is also home to Jefferson Square Park. This park, between Third and Federal streets, has unique star-like patterned walkways and is a historic landmark which was constructed in the early 19th century. Alongside Jefferson Square Park, Dickinson Square Park also attracts residence as a local community hub. With 3 acres of classic turn-of-the-century park design, this safe, comfortable open space features several basketball courts, swing sets, jungle gym equipment, and large shade trees. If the green-scene is not for you, then drive/bike/walk/swing on over to Moyamensing Avenue; running parallel to the Delaware River, Moyamensing counts beautiful church architecture, tidy rowhomes and neighborhood draws like The Industry, a popular neighborhood pub and restaurant.
